September Sigil Challenge
A gentleman in Salem created a daily challenge last year to create a sigil a day with a theme. In witchcraft (stay with me here), sigils are symbols of magical power created with meaning and intention for a specific purpose. There are a few different ways that a person can go about creating a sigil if one is into practicing witchcraft, but there’s a specific RISD graduate by name of Laura Tempest Zakroff that you make it very personal. You can use runes and astrology and things that are witchy and esoteric, but you can also use things that are meaningful to you specifically. I thought this was the coolest challenge. Something I’ve learned is that Ukrainian easter eggs (pysanky) have their own vocabulary that predates Christianity coming to Ukraine, too. I ended up co-opting a mix of witchy symbols, pysanky art, astrological symbols, tarot card meanings, and basically anything that had meaning to me to make my sigils. Some of them are kind of weak, and some aren’t so weak. I have stories behind the creation of each day’s image. Some of them are full of meaning, and some are as simple as “because I felt like it.”
